Associate Professor Peter Lutjen is the Medical Director for Monash IVF. His practice includes general gynaecology with a major interest in infertility as well as general gynaecological surgery. Procedures including laparoscopic surgery, hysteroscopic surgery and tubal microsurgery are offered. He has twenty four years experience in all aspects of in vitro fertilisation.
Peter originally graduated with Bachelor of Science with Honours from the University of New England, Armidale, New South Wales in 1981. He then commenced PhD studies in the area of human reproduction and infertility. This early research work was performed at the Queen Victoria Medical Centre in collaboration with Professors Carl Wood and Alan Trounson during the 1980's. In September of 1986 he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
Following post-doctoral research in the area of human fertility at the Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney he returned to full time undergraduate medical studies in 1988. In 1994 he was awarded the degrees of Medical Bachelor and a Bachelor of Surgery from the University of Sydney.
He returned to Melbourne in 1995 to begin postgraduate medical training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Monash Medical Centre and subsequently at the Royal Women's Hospital in Melbourne. He became Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in 2001. Following further study and research into endocrinology and infertility he was awarded the Certificate of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (CREI) in February 2002. He is one of only forty four specialists internationally with this qualification.
He is an Honorary Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Monash University as well as Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee of Masada Hospital.
